Chapter Seven

“I grew up in Chicago and I’ve never been to this place before. I’ve heard of it, though.”

Molly got to choose the restaurant this time, so she went with Bridgeport Restaurant. It’s a staple in this area because it’s got the best classic comfort food around. With her mouth full of pecan pancake, she nods. “The best.”

I went with one of their healthier options, the Egg White Delight, while Garrett chose the Big 6, which comes with two of everything. He must’ve been hungry. And watching the man eat tells me my assumption was right. Once my breakfast companions finish eating, Molly is the first to bring up the locket.

“So, how you gonna get her necklace back to her, Officer Studly?”

Beats assface, I guess.

Wiping his mouth, Garrett pushes his empty plate away from him and picks up his coffee cup. “I’m meeting with my boss tomorrow to talk it out. He knows the Konigs.” He rolls his eyes, and I smile because he’s cute when he makes little faces. “They run in the same crowd or some shit.”

“Uh-huh.” Molly nods. “What does that even mean? Is your boss gonna tell you to drop it? Because if he does, that’s bullshit.”

“He may run in the same circles, but he’s a cop first.”

“He’d better be.”

Garrett turns to look at me. We’re sitting on the same side of the booth. “How are you two friends? You’re complete opposites.”

“We grew up next door to each other.” I smile at Molly. “She’s been my best friend since we were little.”

“Opposites attract, assface. Thought that was obvious.” She glares at him. “You’d better not hurt her”—she points her fork at me—“because I’m like a ninja. I’ll sneak up on you when you least expect it.”

“Are you threatening a police officer?” The two of them aren’t messing around. It’s starting to worry me.

“You guys.”

“No. I’m threatening a guy who’s got the hots for my best friend.”

Hots? “Molly—”

Garrett’s leaning over the table, closer to Molly now. “My feelings for Lucy are none of your business.”

“Oh, yeah?” Molly’s leaning over too so their faces are inches apart. “Lucy’s been my business ever since that fucker Todd Akers pushed her down on the playground skinning her knees and tearing her favorite dress.” She looks at me. “That dress was ugly as fuck, by the way.”

I shrug. I adored that dress. It was yellow gingham. Who wouldn’t love a yellow gingham dress?

“I kicked him in the nuts and said if he touched her again, I’d make sure he sang soprano for the rest of his life.”

“Molly.” I want to laugh, but it’s all true. Even in first grade, Molly was a force to be reckoned with.

“I’ll never stop protecting her. She’s—” Molly glances at me, then back at Garrett. “Special.”

“You don’t think I know that?” Garrett’s getting into this, and I’m not sure how I feel about any of it.

“You met her yesterday, fuckface. You know nothing.”

“I know enough.”

Molly leans back into her seat, tossing her napkin onto her empty plate.
